Compensation & Benefit Reference Guide for Students
Please visit our Compensation and Benefits home page for self-service tools that will assist you in getting set up as an employee of Employment and Social Development Canada.
How to ensure you get paid correctly
Important: If you have not received pay within 20 days of your first day or have missed a pay, please notify your manager immediately as you may be eligible for an Emergency Salary Advance.
You need to obtain a MyKEY as soon as possible in order to access pay information via the Compensation Web Application (CWA) and for Phoenix self service functionality.
You need to identify your Section 34 Manager so they can assign your work schedule and approve any overtime, additional hours and/or leave without pay.
As soon as possible, sign in to myEMS (PeopleSoft) with the user name and password used to login to the network every day to update your personal information. Refer to Change to Personal Information for this process.
For students working part-time schedules, it's imperative that your schedules match in MyEMS (PeopleSoft) and Phoenix to avoid unnecessary pay issues. Any changes to your schedules should be reported to your manager as soon as possible. Refer to Work Schedules / Hours of Work for this process.
Submit a Pay Escalation request
Employee Responsibility
If you are experiencing a pay issue, you must refer to the Pay Escalation Process and, if deemed appropriate, submit an escalated pay issue request using the category Student with pay issue, applicable sub-category.
Manager / Section 34 Manager responsibility
If a student is on leave or has been terminated and is experiencing a pay issue, you must refer to the Pay Escalation Process and, if deemed appropriate, submit an escalated pay issue request on their behalf using the category Student with pay issue, applicable sub-category.
Training
You need to register for a Saba account (our integrated learning management system) to manage your learning requests. The essential training curriculum for employees will automatically load into your Saba profile once you have created an account.
You should discuss with your manager any further training that may be required specific to your position. Some additional, suggested training related to compensation include:
- HR-to-Pay (Phoenix) training on how to use Phoenix Self-Service and create overtime / additional hours requests.
- Demystifying Your Pay Stubs on how to interpret your pay stubs.
- Additional Phoenix training is available through the Canada School of Public Service (CSPC).
