  • How do I back up and restore my IE favorites?

As a best practice, regular backup of your Internet Explorer "Favorites" and desktop files will ensure that you do not lose these files if your computer crashes. This document provides easy-to-follow instructions on how to backup these files.

Note: You do not need to create a backup copy if the network is preserving these for you (see step #2 of the Back-up Procedure below). In this case your “Favorites” are restored to you automatically after an upgrade, or when you receive a new computer, etc.

    Back-up Procedures

Before starting the process, you must be at a computer in which your desktop items and "Favorites" are showing.

We recommended that you clean your desktop before doing any backup. Remove all personal files from your C:\ drive, as you should NOT be storing any personal files on any drive. Music and movies will slow down the process, take up unnecessary space on the network. This could cause problems during the backup, potentially triggering errors and preventing you from transferring data to your F:\ Drive.

    1. Open the following folder: C:\Users in Windows Explorer.
      1. You will receive a Microsoft Outlook Security Notice. Select Yes.
      2. Then, open the folder with your name ("Firstname.Lastname").
    2. Look for a "Favorites" folder. If you cannot find this folder, it is because the network is preserving your "Favorites" and desktop, in which case you do not need to complete the rest of these steps.
      • Otherwise, right-click on "Favorites" and select "Copy".

Note: Keep this window open, since you will need to return to it to backup your desktop.

    3. Open your F:\ Drive and create a new folder for your backup (e.g. F:\BackUp Profile Dec2019\).
    4. In the new folder that you have created, right-click and select "Paste" to create a copy of your Favorites in this location.
    5. Return to the window that you opened in step #1 above (Firstname.Lastname). Right-click on the "Desktop" folder and select "Copy".
    6. Return to your back-up folder that you created on your F:\ Drive, Right-click in this folder and select "Paste". A back-up copy of your "Desktop" folder should now be located in the same folder as your back-up "Favorites" folder.

    Restore Procedure

If you have successfully created a back-up using the steps above, it is possible for you to restore those folders to your workstation (e.g. new computer, after an upgrade, etc.).

    1. Open your F:\ Drive. Locate the folder that contains your back-up “Favorites” and “Desktop” folders.
    2. Right-click on the “Favorites” folder and select “Copy”.
    3. In Windows Explorer, open the following folder: C:\Users. Then, open the folder with your name (“Firstname.Lastname”). Right-click in this folder and select “Paste”.
    4. You will receive the “Confirm Folder Replace” message. Select “Yes to All”.
    5. Return to the window that you opened in step #1 (i.e. your F:\ drive). Right-click on the “Desktop” folder and select “Copy”.
    6. Return to your C:\ drive folder called “Firstname.Lastname”; right-click in this folder and select “Paste”.
    7. You will receive the “Confirm Folder Replace” message: Select “Yes to All”.

Your desktop items and “Favorites” should now be restored.

  • How do I clean out or delete temporary files, Browsing History, cookies, saved passwords and web form information?

As you surf the web, the web browser stores a lot of information from temporary files, Browsing History, cookies, saved passwords and web form information. All of this information is called your history. However, all this information takes up space and can potentially slow down computer performance and Internet speed, as well as prevent some websites from displaying properly.

To delete temporary files, Browsing History, cookies, saved passwords and web form information:

    1. Got to Tools > Internet Options
    2. Under the General tab > Browsing History…
    3. Click Delete… then select the specific information you want deleted,

You can also choose to select the box to “Delete browsing history on exit”.

  • How do I correct website display problems, like misaligned text, images, or text boxes?

Some websites have not been updated to modern browser standards. Any internal webpage that is displaying incorrectly is to be reported to the web master responsible for the site. Most departmental intranets have a feedback form or General Delivery e-mail account for this purpose.

    1. Copy the website URL from the Address bar.
    2. Click on the "Contact Us", "Feedback", or the "Search/Help" button on the menu bar at the top of the page. Look for a link to a form or for an e-mail account.
    3. Complete the "feedback" form or message and include the website URL in the message text. Send the form.
  • How do I know if a webpage is safe or secure?

A secure connection to a website includes a layer of encryption when transmitting information over an Internet connection.

There are two general indications of a secured web page:

    1. The web page URL includes an “s” after the http (https:).
    2. There is a "Lock" icon somewhere in the window of the browser. (Microsoft Internet Explorer displays the lock icon in the lower-right of the browser window.)
  • How do I use the Search function?

In IE 11, the Address Bar is also a Search Bar. Type in search term(s), and then either click the Search magnifying glass (Ctrl+E) beside the address bar, or press Enter.

Suggestions will appear below the address bar as you type in a dropdown list. You can either click using the mouse pointer to navigate, or use the up and down arrows to move through the list.

  • What are my alternatives to printing and/or saving information from the Internet?

To save information from an online source, you can make an electronic file instead of printing a physical print copy.

Please note that embedded hyperlinks will generally not work in PDF or XPS documents saved in this manner.

These instructions are general to most programs.

    To create a Microsoft XPS:

    1. File > Print
    2. In the Print window, there will be an option to select a printer. Within this list, select the option of Microsoft XPS Document Writer.
    3. Click Print.
    4. While a save location will be pre-filled, you will be prompted to provide a name for the file. Change these settings as needed.
    5. Click Save.

To create to Adobe PDF (requires Adobe Acrobat license):

    1. File > Print
    2. In the Print window, there will be an option to select a printer. Within this list, select the option of Adobe PDF.
    3. Click Print.
    4. The Save As window will open, pre-filled with a file name and save location. Change these settings as needed.
    5. Click Save.
    6. The PDF will automatically open.

To save a webpage as a Word document:

A webpage can be force-saved as a Word document but fonts, images and alignment may not be reproduced exactly as seen in the web browser. (Additionally, the images associated with a webpage may be downloaded as separate files in a folder.) However, most hyperlinks will be preserved and can be accessed by moving the cursor to the desired hyperlink, and while holding Ctrl, clicking on it.

    1. File > Save As
    2. Select an appropriate file name, but change the file extension to doc.
      • E.g. Software - ESDC-SC IntraWeb.htm becomes ESDC-SC IntraWeb.doc
    3. Click Save.
Note: By deleting any unnecessary images, the file size will significantly reduce.
  • How do I access a live streaming event using Internet Explorer?

The departmental standard web browser, Internet Explorer 11, does not support live streaming, including 360-degree videos and their playback on Facebook and YouTube.

If there is a business need to access a live streaming event, please submit an online service request to the National Service Desk (NSD) prior to the event and request that the Firefox browser be installed on your desktop.

  • What do I do if I cannot open a PDF file or other document file on a web page?

If you are viewing a web page, refresh the web page by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard. You can also clear the cache by pressing Shift + F5, then F5 again, which will allow the browser to access a new copy of the document.

If the page displays correctly but the PDF or file continues to be inaccessible, the hyperlink may not be working or the document file contains an error. Contact the owner of the web page through the Contact or Feedback link to notify the owner that the document is inaccessible.

  • What do I do if I encounter frequent pop-up messages?

If you are receiving pop-up messages, your computer may be infected with spyware/adware or other malware.

Please contact the National Service Desk immediately.

    3. Drag the URL shortcuts (or folders) in the list to the new folder. If the number of shortcuts or folders makes dragging impractical, you can use the Move to Folder button instead.

To remove a page from your Favorites list:

    1. On the Favorites menu, select Organize Favorites
    2. On the Favorites list, select the shortcut you want to delete, and then select the Delete button.
