  • What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?

Electronic and digital signatures are terms that are often used interchangeably; however, they are not the same type of signature. An electronic signature neither validates the identity of the signer, nor secures the content after signing.

The digital signature with Entrust authenticates the signer through using the password-protected myKEY certificate, meets the departmental IT security requirements and is supported by Legal Services. Currently, during the COVID-19 crisis, the Chief Financial Officer Branch (CFOB) only accepts digital signatures when a "wet" signature is not feasible.

  • How do I insert a digital signature into a document?

To insert a digital signature into a document, follow the appropriate instructions on the Digital Signatures — How to Guide.

  • Cannot open a PDF file on a web page

If you are viewing a web page, confirm your Internet connection by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard: this should refresh the web page you are viewing. If the page displays correctly, the hyperlink may not be working or the PDF file contains an error. Contact the owner of the web page to inform them you require this document.

If the web page fails to display when you refresh it, you have lost your connection to that web site. Try closing Internet Explorer and restarting it, then return to that web page and try again.

If you cannot view any page in Internet explorer, you may have lost your Internet connection. Restarting your computer may correct your Internet connection. If your Internet connection continues to fail for a prolonged period, submit an online request to the National Service Desk.

  • How can I make the print out fit properly on the paper?

When printing from a PDF, the printout does not fit on the paper properly. The print settings for Reader need to be adjusted to fix this.

    1. Select the Print file icon in Adobe (or use the shortcut CTRL + P).
    2. In the "Print" window, under the Page Sizing and Handling section:
      1. Remove the checkmark next to "Choose Paper source by PDF page size" if you see one.
      2. Above that option, select the "Fit" setting.
  • How can I open PDF files in Adobe Reader instead of Internet Explorer?

Note: If you work on CPP/OAS, EI processing, or Imaging, PDFs must be opened in Internet Explorer. In these cases, do not use the following instructions.

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click “Tools”.
    3. Select “Manage Add-ons”.
    4. From the “Show” drop-down menu in the left pane;
      1. Select “All add-ons” and wait 5 seconds to allow all Add-Ons to be listed on the right pane.
      2. Select “Adobe Reader” and click the “Disable” button at the bottom right.
    5. If Adobe Reader is not listed;
      1. From the “Show” drop-down menu, change the selection to “Run without permission” and wait 5-10 seconds for the add-ons to be updated.
      2. If “Adobe Reader” is listed, then click on the “Disable” button at the bottom right otherwise go to step 6.
    6. Open Adobe Reader.
      1. Click on the Help Menu.
      2. Select “Repair installation”.
      3. Repairs will start; this may take 5 to 10 minutes.
    7. Once completed, repeat steps 1 to 5 to make the change to your browser.

If PDF files still open in Internet Explorer, visit the Windows 10 quick fix for "Changing Which Software Will Open a File".

  • Message: 'Enable AutoComplete' or Update Notification

Automatic updates are disabled for Adobe Reader, so that the same version will remain standard on all ESDC computers. Related messages should also be disabled, so if you are receiving this message you may not be running the standard version. You should submit an online request to the National Service Desk to have Adobe Reader reinstalled.

  • What do I do if I cannot open a PDF file that is on my computer?

If you are able to open other PDF documents, the problem is likely with the PDF document itself and it may be corrupted. Contact the owner of the document to request they resend you the file.

If you are unable to open any PDF document on your computer, there may be a problem with your Adobe Reader software and you should submit an online request to the National Service Desk.

  • What do I do if I want to edit a PDF file?

Adobe Reader does not allow you to edit PDF documents, only to view them. You can open and edit a PDF file using Microsoft Office, but you will probably have the best results if you can obtain an original version in another format.

  • What do I do if the search results are not consistently highlighted in the PDF?

If you discover that search results are not consistently being highlighted, or a vertical bar appears at either the right or left edge of the search term, you will need to use the Search window:

    1. In Adobe Reader, from the Edit menu select "Advanced Search"
(or use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Ctrl + F).
    2. In the "Search" window, enter the word or phrase you would like to search for and select the Search button (or press the Enter key on your keyboard).
    3. From the resulting list of search results, select the entry you want to view.
