Meet our new Senior Disclosure Officer: Mary Crescenzi

November 14–20 is International Fraud Awareness Week!

Mary Crescenzi started her career in the public service over 32 years ago. Although she has only been the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Integrity Services Branch since August 30, 2021, she is not new to ESDC. In fact, she has spent the majority of her career in the department, and after taking on a few assignments in other government departments, including at the Privy Council Office, she is happy to have returned to where, she feels, the client comes first.

In addition to her role as the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Integrity Services Branch, Mary has accepted the role of Senior Disclosure Officer (SDO). As ESDC's new Senior Disclosure Officer, Mary plays an important role in upholding the Public Servants Disclosure Protection Act (PSDPA) by providing a safe mechanism for employees to make disclosures of wrongdoing. You may be wondering, "What is considered a wrongdoing?" In short, a wrongdoing refers to a situation that affects the public's confidence in the Department's ability to carry out its work. Section 8 of the PSDPA further defines the categories of wrongdoing.

Additionally, the SDO is responsible for:

  • Promoting a positive environment for disclosing and dealing with wrongdoing;
  • Receiving, reviewing and coordinating the investigation of disclosures of wrongdoing;
  • Protecting the identity of persons involved in the disclosure process;
  • Notifying the person(s) who made a disclosure on the outcome of the review or investigation into the disclosure; and
  • Reporting the findings of investigations into wrongdoings.

The pandemic has not only changed many aspects of our lives but it has also changed the types of fraud and wrongdoing that the Department faces. We all have a role to play to help prevent and manage fraud and wrongdoing.

During this week, we invite you to find out more about protected disclosures of wrongdoing, and the practical tools and procedures involved, by visiting the SDO's Intranet page.

If you have not already done so, we also encourage you to take the Preventing Fraud in the Workplace training and learn about the Five principles of Fraud and Corruption. These resources and tools will increase your knowledge and better equip you to recognize, prevent, and report fraud in the workplace.
