Passwords

The use of strong passwords is the first line of defense for any IT system and is crucial in maintaining the security of information and the electronic network.

Beginning on September 3, 2019, your network password (the one you use to log onto your workstation) will no longer expire every 90 days. Frequently changing passwords can be frustrating and results in many forgotten passwords. This change will help ease the burden, but at the same time, you are strongly encouraged to create longer and stronger passwords that go beyond the minimum requirements.

Weak or commonly used passwords can be cracked in minutes by tools readily available on the internet.

Use this infographic to help you create and remember strong passwords!

Your network password must:

  • Be at least 8 characters long.
  • Contain at least three of the following:
    • one uppercase letter (A – Z);
    • one lowercase letter (a – z);
    • one special character (* $ !); and/or
    • one number (0 – 9).

DO...

  • Pick a password that you can remember without writing it down. Follow the advice in Creating Strong Passwords.
  • Keep in mind that special characters can be in different places on your keyboard depending on the type of keyboard you have.
  • Immediately change your password if you believe that your password has been disclosed or discovered.

DON'T...

  • Create simple passwords that anyone can guess.
  • Use information shared on your social media accounts in your passwords.
  • Create passwords so complex that you can’t remember them.
  • Share your password with anyone or write it down where someone else could find it.
  • Use the same password for all of your accounts – this can cause multiple account breaches.
