Entrust Encryption and myKey

Entrust is used to encrypt files or e-mails internally before sending them, and between other Government of Canada (GoC) departments. This can also add another level of security to files stored in secure locations on the departmental network. While most employees are familiar with using myKey for accessing pay information via the Compensation Web Access (CWA) website, it is also used for the purposes of encrypting and decrypting sensitive files and e-mails.

DO...

  • Register for MyKey by visiting: MyKey Sign-up.
  • For certain circumstances, encryption should be used even when sending email or storing information on the departmental network. Review Appendix 3.
  • Understand how to encrypt emails and read encrypted emails using Entrust.
  • Ensure your intended recipient has an up-to-date Entrust certificate before sending them an encrypted email.
  • Understand that the purpose of encrypting a file or e-mail is to ensure that it cannot be viewed by anyone other than the intended recipient(s). Including a digital signature allows the recipient the added security of knowing that message was created by a trusted sender.

DON'T...

  • Write down your Entrust password or share it with anyone.
  • Attempt to use MyKey to encrypt e-mails or materials for distribution to individuals that are not listed in your GoC Outlook address book.
