Onboarding Roadmap

At ESDC, the arrival of new employees and students is of great importance. From the onset, we want new employees and students to feel welcome and included in their new environment. As they transition into their new roles and responsibilities, we want to make sure that they are given the proper support to be productive with meaningful work as soon as possible. First impressions matter! Let’s make it a lasting one!

The onboarding experience can be broken down into five (5) distinct stages.

What is the difference between onboarding and orientation?

Onboarding is the process of integrating new employees into the workplace, beginning with the acceptance of the initial job offer and continuing through the first 6 to 12 months of employment. It includes activities such as training and mentoring, as well as providing all pertinent information on internal policies, work processes and established cultural norms.

Orientation is a critical component of the onboarding process and typically includes tangible learning activities (i.e. courses and learning activities that outline a department’s security policies, procedures, information systems, health and safety procedures, welcoming events, etc.). It also includes required training at the Canada School of Public Service to learn about the fundamentals of the public service.
