Mentoring

iService Catalog

Mentoring is an integral part of the continuum of learning opportunities available in ESDC. It provides the ability to better harness employee potential while contributing to people management excellence.

Mentoring is a one-on-one relationship between people with different levels of experience and expertise in which the mentor helps a less experienced employee learn the skills, attitudes and values required to be successful in the workplace.

Mentoring builds the organization’s capacity to transfer knowledge, create a sense of community and build bridges. It helps to provide informal learning and development opportunities outside the traditional classroom environment. Mentoring supports horizontal and vertical collaboration, communication and connection among employees through the sharing of knowledge, experience and organizational insight.

Mentoring also plays a vital role in the current organizational demographic shift because it gives mentors the opportunity to pass on their public service experience and knowledge to less experienced employees.

The ESDC Mentoring Program

A pair of hands holding earth and a seedling. Pre-launch of the ESDC Mentoring ProgramThe ESDC Mentoring Program (opens new window) is available to everyone. This self-directed learning opportunity is open to all employees across the Department looking for a social, collaborative and cost-effective learning experience.

Through the program, employees can create a personal profile indicating their interests and experiences, view other employees’ profiles, network with new colleagues, and share knowledge and experiences with each other in a mentoring relationship.

Anyone across the Department can be a mentor since we all have valuable experiences and perspectives to share with colleagues. The best mentors act as guides, and do not necessarily have to have all the ‘answers’; all a good mentor needs is an open and curious mind and the willingness to learn in a collaborative way with their mentee. A mentoring relationship takes a time commitment of only about two hours per month.
