Executive Talent Management

What is it?

Talent Management (TM) is a set of integrated processes designed to attract, develop, motivate, and retain productive, engaged employees.

How does it work at ESDC?

  • Executives have ongoing discussions with their managers about performance and talent management.
  • Each fall, Executives are invited to update their Talent Management Questionnaire through ETMS (Executive Talent Management System). Managers engage direct reports in a one-on-one dialogue, and complete their section of the questionnaire which includes a proposed TM Talent Map for Executives.
  • Senior leaders meet to review results and approve TM placements for the department overall and consider opportunities to manage talent, including, for example, staffing positions that may soon become vacant.
  • Managers meet with executives to confirm the talent placement and consider next steps, as needed.

What is done with the information?

  • Supports TM discussions between you and your manager, assisting in identifying learning and development needs, assignment opportunities, succession planning strategies, etc.
  • Input for departmental recruitment, retention, assessment, development and succession planning efforts at EX level
  • Provides data for analysis and reporting on strengths, areas for development, gaps and trends that the Senior Management team (DMs, ADMs and EHSMs) use at the Talent Management Review Committee and ongoing EX Workplace Management Committee meetings
  • Provides a resource pool for the staffing of assignments or acting opportunities where employees are identified as “ready for lateral movement”, “ready for advancement” or “move to more suitable role”.
  • Provides input for consideration at Treasury Board led cross-departmental discussions on managing talent for EX-3’s and above.
