Daniel: Hi, I'm Daniel Comeau, your Departmental Security Officer. Today's topic is physical security.
Daniel: Say you're escorting visitors into the building and someone tailgates behind them as you open the door.
Lorne: Tailgate party! Awesome idea, Daniel. I've got these baby back ribs in here...
Daniel: Not that kind of tailgating, Lorne. We're talking security breach.
Lorne: Oh, THAT kind of tailgating! You mean "someone who is not authorized to enter a particular area does so by following closely behind someone who has legitimate access."
Daniel: Did you look that up?
Lorne: Um, no.
Daniel: Security really is an everyday business.
Take our department ID card for example. You wear it so people can see it. But I don't need to tell you that, right Lorne?
Lorne: My ID is RIGHT here, I'm sure. Uh, let's see...
Daniel: Your department ID card should be clearly visible at all times. Just tell me you didn't lend it to anybody...(ha ha)
Lorne: Library card, no. Mastercard, no... Of course not. I must have put it down somewhere on my desk...
Daniel: (pauses and looks at Lorne, exasperated) No Lorne. What if it's lost or stolen? Missing cards have to be reported.
Lorne: OK I get it. (looks up at the animation that appears in the corner of the screen and points) What if I see someone without ID? I mean, other than me.
Daniel: If you see a visitor in the office who doesn't seem to belong, and you feel comfortable, just ask "Can I help you?"
Lorne: That's so… Canadian. Is that all I do?
Daniel: You're letting them know we care about Security.
Daniel: Remember, all visitors need to be escorted at all times. If you still aren't sure, call security or tell your manager.
Daniel: Of course staying safe always starts right at your desk. Whether you step out for a meeting or for the night, always lock your computer, clean your desk and lock your cabinets.
Lorne: But Daniel, I'm just stepping out for a coffee. Who's going to … hey! Where'd my phone go?!
Daniel: You never know when an emergency will strike! (reacts to shaking) So when it does, remember these safety tips!
Lorne: Earthquake!!! Quick! Let's get an elevator!! You call 911 – I've lost my phone!!!
Daniel: We have to stay Lorne.
Lorne: You mean we don't just...leave?
Daniel: Yeup. There are all kinds of emergency situations. Floods. Fires.
Audio: Attention. This is a security announcement.
Daniel: No matter what happens, stay and wait for instructions from the emergency teams or your floor warden and… follow their directions.
Lorne: If you follow the directions and stay together, you stay safe.
Daniel: When you think of it, each of us keeps our workplace, information, assets, IT systems – and each other - safe and secure. It really starts with you.
Lorne: I'd say we each have a role to play, so... keep your eye on the ball! Nice catch, Daniel!
