Windows 10 Guide for Teleworkers

Version 1.5

The following information is for teleworkers specifically (i.e. employees using Virtual Private Network [VPN] with FortiClient to connect to the ESDC network). It borrows information from other sources, brought together as a single reference for this audience.

Note: this guide does not apply if you are using AppGate to connect to your work computer.

Getting Ready for Windows10

This section outlines what you should know and prepare for in advance of receiving the Windows 10 upgrade. Additional information that may assist you is in the Getting Ready for Windows 10 guide.

  1. Consult the Windows 10 Deployment Schedule (XLSX, 1.2 MB) to determine the approximate date when your Windows 10 update will occur. As this approximate date nears, the schedule will be updated to provide you with an exact day for your upgrade. The schedule will also display the name of your ESDC home office.
  2. Windows 10 must be installed over a wired connection at an ESDC location. It cannot be installed over VPN (or GC Wi-Fi). As a teleworker you are expected to bring your computer to your ESDC home office on the day of your scheduled upgrade.
  3. Teleworkers should submit an online request to the National Service Desk (NSD), (identifying the topic as “Windows 10” and choosing “My request is related to the deployment schedule”) if one of the following applies:
    • Needing assistance to obtain access to your designated ESDC workplace address;
    • Not having a designated ESDC workplace address;
    • Not able to bring your device to a designated ESDC workplace address.
  4. Refer to the FortiClient Guide for Windows 10 and consider printing a copy for your reference.
  5. Once your computer is in the ESDC office, ensure that it is connected to a network cable and that you have logged in to the network at least once. Finally, restart your computer so that you are logged out again, and leave it turned on.

Welcome to Windows 10

This section describes the steps to follow immediately after you have been upgraded to Windows 10. Additional information that may assist you is available in the Welcome to Windows 10 (PDF, 399 KB) guide.

  1. Login to Your Computer
    • While it is still at an ESDC location and connected by network cable, you must login to your computer at least once before taking it home in order to create a profile under your name on that computer. This is required before you can remotely connect successfully using VPN.
  2. Confirm All Software is Restored
    • Once you are logged in, you should confirm the presence of all software on your computer that you require to perform your work.
    • Some software may require that you restart your computer (sometimes twice) in order to complete its installation and to have it restored.
    • For essential software that is still missing:
      1. In the Windows Start menu, type the words "Software Centre" and select it from the results. Alternatively, select "Microsoft System Center" from the list of all software, and then choose "Software Center". Here you can determine if there is any software that is still being delivered to your computer, and if there is any delivered software that has not yet been installed.
      2. In the Software Centre window, review the status of any software that you find listed there. Software that is in the process of being delivered to you will display a percent-completed status. If the software's status indicates that its delivery has failed, select the name of that software to find the "Retry" option. Use this option to attempt its delivery again; this will usually solve the issue.
      3. You can select the Install button for delivered software to have it installed now. Otherwise, it will be installed the next time that you restart your computer (e.g. at the end of your workday).
    • Forticlient is essential software that you must confirm is restored and can run now. If this (or other software that you need immediately) is neither installed nor listed in the Software Centre, please submit an online request to the National Service Desk to have its installation initiated (topic: Windows 10).
    • Allow up to 48 hours for any non-essential software to be reinstalled (over VPN) before you submit an online request to the National Service Desk (topic: Windows 10) for further assistance.
