Guest Wi-Fi User Guide

This document provides instructions for guests of ESDC with a valid account to use this service (where available), so that they may access the Internet using any equipped device and subsequently connect to other networks via VPN.

Getting Started

The Guest Wi-Fi (GC Wi-Fi) service provides wireless Internet access for visitors to ESDC. Establishing a Guest Wi-Fi connection from an equipped ESDC location requires:

  1. A device that is wi-fi enabled and supports a web browser (e.g. laptop or tablet).
  2. A unique Guest Wi-Fi username and password (this is not the same as the credentials required to access the ESDC network). ESDC authorized requestors (i.e. manager or above, or their delegate) can acquire this in advance for an expected guest by submitting an online request to the National Service Desk. The guest is expected to change their temporary password the first time they login.
  3. To connect to their department or agency’s network, a guest of ESDC must be using a device with a VPN client installed.
  4. You must be visiting an ESDC location that provides the Guest Wi-Fi service.

Note: Guests who do not know whether they have the VPN client installed and/or whether their department or agency uses a proxy server should contact their technical support staff for this information prior to visiting.

Accessing Guest Wi-Fi – Login Procedure
  • Step 1:
  • An approved applicant for this service (see above) will receive an e-mail from IITB (ESDC) support staff with information about how to login to the Guest Wi-Fi service. Retain this e-mail for reference during the following steps.
  • Step 2:
  • If your department/agency uses a proxy server (otherwise, skip to Step 3):
    1. Log into Windows and launch Internet Explorer. It will take longer than normal, because you are offline and will be using a cached profile.
    2. From the Tools menu, select Internet options.

Tools menu - Internet options

  1. In the Internet Options window, choose the Connections tab and select the LAN settings button.
  2. In the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, look for the Proxy server section and uncheck the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN to turn off this setting. Then select the OK buttons to close this series of windows.

Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window

  1. Close Internet Explorer, then open it again
  2. Visit an external website, such as www.google.ca or www.cbc.ca (i.e., an address not ending in .prv). At first, you will receive an error message. Select the option that reads Continue to this website (not recommended).
  3. This time you should see the login screen. Enter the guest wi-fi username and password you received via e-mail. Accept the Terms by selecting the checkbox, then select the Log In button.

  • Step 3:
  • If your department does not use a proxy server (else perform Step 2, then skip to Step 4), to login you can do the following:
    1. Open the wi-fi network connection setup on your device: look in the system tray (bottom-right corner of your Windows taskbar) for a series of icons next to today’s date and time. Select the scale icon to view your connectivity options.

Select the scale icon to view your connectivity options

  1. From the list of connection options, select GC-WIFI. This is the Guest Wi-fi service.
  2. You will be prompted to enter a password (else called a “security key” or “pass key” or “encryption key”, etc., depending on your device). Enter ssc-wifi
  3. You will then be taken to the login portal. Enter the guest wi-fi username and password you received via e-mail. Accept the Terms by selecting the checkbox, then select the Log In button.

Continue to Step 4.

  • Step 4:
  • The first time you login, you will be prompted to change your temporary password and to create a secret question and answer that will help you in future should you forget.
  • Your new password must be at least eight (8) characters long and contain at least one each of an uppercase letter, lowercase letter and digit.
  • Finish by selecting the Change Password button.

  • Step 5:
  • After updating your password, a review page will display your account information. You can choose to download and save this information to your device by selecting the Download account details hyperlink, in case this information is not correctly e-mailed to you.
  • When you have completed your review of this information, select the Log In button. Your Internet connection via Guest Wi-Fi is now established.

  • Step 6:
  • Launch your VPN software and establish a connection to your department or agency’s network, just as you would from a public wi-fi location or from home.
  • Step 7 (ONLY IF you did Step 2, above):
  • Return to the instructions in Step 2, but this time use them to re-enable the proxy server by restoring the checkmark you removed.
Recovering a Forgotten Password

In the event that you forget your Guest Wi-Fi password:

  1. At the login page, select I’ve forgotten my password.

Recovering a Forgotten Password Screen

  1. Enter your username when prompted, then select the Reset button.

Reset Button

  1. Enter the secret answer to your secret question, then choose a new password (at least 8 characters long, and contains at least one each of an uppercase letter, lowercase letter and digit). Enter your new password a second time to confirm it, then select Reset. Provided that you entered the correct secret answer and a new valid password (i.e. you are not prompted to try again), your password is now reset.
Note: guests of ESDC experiencing an issue with establishing a Guest Wi-Fi connection may receive assistance from the National Service Desk of ESDC. For all other technical support (e.g. challenges with connecting to their own agency/department network), guests are required to contact their agency/department’s technical support.
