Long Service Award

Long Service Award is a formal recognition of employees within the Public Service. Milestones will be recognized every five (5) years, beginning at five (5) years of service.

  • How do you calculate years of service?

For the purposes of calculating long service, the whole length of the career is considered rather than the number of days or hours that make up the career. For example, part-time and seasonal employment is included when calculating long service, regardless of the actual number of hours the employee works and whether or not the service is interrupted. As long as the employee has not terminated his employment, his service is calculated on the same principle as an indeterminate employee. Service in the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and any federal public sector organization are also included in the calculation of service milestones.

For all requests to verify an employee's years of service, please contact the Compensation and Benefits group directly.

  • What years of service are recognized at ESDC?

All employees are eligible for recognition for their years of service in the Public Service of Canada. ESDC formally recognizes the 5 years of service milestone and every five years thereafter. Awards are granted to employees, including locally hired employees abroad, and part-time or seasonal employees, who have attained the required number of years of service, regardless of any breaks in service. Employees who are on acting and/or term assignments in another branch/region will be recognized by their home branch/region unless other arrangements are made with the host branch/region.

Gifts for Long Service Awards (15 years or more) must be chosen from the federally approved catalogue of items available on Seasons. Arrangements can be made for recipients who have a partial or full visual impairment.

Requests for Long Service Awards must be actioned within twelve (12) months of the milestone date.

  • I worked for 25 years on a part-time basis. Am I eligible for a Long Service Award?

Yes. Part-time or seasonal employees who have completed the required service, with or without interruptions, are eligible.

  • An employee is on a secondment/acting assignment in an organization other than their own. Which organization is responsible for recognizing long service?

The employee's home organization is responsible for recognizing the employee's long service. However, if the host organization recognizes other milestones and wishes to recognize the employee, they may do so at their own expense.

At ESDC, the employee's substantive position is used for the purposes of Long Service Awards.

  • Do I need to order my Long Service Award through Seasons?

Yes. ESDC has agreed to participate in the Seasons Program as the recognized service provider of choice for Long Service Awards.

  • How do I collect my Long Service Award?

Contact your Recognition Branch/Regional Coordinator for further information.

Note that Branch and Regional Recognition Coordinators should contact you directly to ask your preference as to how you may want to receive the award, for example, it may be publicly or discretely. Your wishes will be respected.

  • What if I do not want one or any of the Long Service gifts being offered?

You have a right to decline one or all of these items. You must submit in writing your decision to not receive a gift and it will be noted in our database. You will not be offered a gift at a future date for the same milestone.

  • The Long Service Awards policy has changed frequently over the years. Are you committed to keeping these milestones once the new policy is implemented?

There is a commitment to review the policy every three years as part of the policy development framework. The policy will be adjusted according to the evaluation results.
