Sit/stand workstations

The following guidelines apply to sit/stand workstations:

Sit/Stand Workstations

  • Keying: the height of the work surface should be easily adjusted so that the keyboard is at the employee’s elbow height. Ensure that the shoulders are relaxed and that the wrists are straight.
  • Adjustability: the sit/stand workstation should be easily adjustable in order to accommodate employees with functional limitations, without adding extra stress on the employee’s back.

When standing at the workstation it should be designed as specified:

  • Knee clearance must be at least 30 cm [12 in] in depth and 65 cm [26 in] in length across the workstation and be free from obstructions.
  • The height of the work surface above the floor must be between 100 to 120 cm [39 to 47 in]
  • The feet should be placed hip width and knees should remain unlocked. Similar to the sitting posture, the employee should stay close to the work surface when standing and avoid reaching and twisting of the trunk, head and arms.
