  • Health

    The World Health Organization defines health as "…a state of complete Physical, Mental and Social Well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."


  • Mental Health

    The World Health Organization recognizes that "Mental Health is a state of well-being in which the individual:

    • realizes his or her own abilities;
    • can cope with the normal stresses of life;
    • can work productively and fruitfully; and
    • is able to make a contribution to his or her community’.

  • Mental Illness

    According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, mental illnesses are characterized by alterations in thinking, mood or behaviour associated with significant distress and impaired functioning.

    Examples of specific mental illnesses include:

    • Mood disorders: major depression and bipolar disorder
    • Schizophrenia
    • Anxiety disorders
    • Personality disorders
    • Eating disorders
    • Problem gambling
    • Substance dependency
