Leave with Pay / Extra Duty Pay (including Travel Expenses) / Shift Premiums

An employee's entitlement to various types of leave with pay and compensation for extra duty pay (overtime / additional hours), travel expenses related to extra duty pay and shift / late-hour premiums is pursuant to the terms and conditions of employment and the relevant collective agreement (if applicable).

In addition, the Directive on Leave and Special Working Arrangements supports the terms and conditions of employment by providing direction on the administration of certain types of leave with pay.

An employee is accorded the benefits of collective bargaining once a contractual agreement is signed that ensures at least three (3) months of employment or an existing agreement is extended to reach a cumulative of three (3) months or more of continuous employment.

Entitlement to certain paid leave types and the calculation of leave credits may vary, depending on the employee's collective agreement and period(s) of continuous employment / service. For the purposes of family-related leave entitlement, employees should refer to their respective collective agreement for the definition of 'family member'.

Below is information on some common types of leave with pay, as well as how to submit requests for leave, extra duty pay, travel expenses related to extra duty pay and shift premiums.
