Work Schedule and Other Working Arrangements

Here are some of the working arrangements that are available to federal public service employees:


Regular Schedule

As prescribed by your Collective Agreement or Terms and Conditions of Employment (37.50 or 40.00 hours per week for a full-time employee):

  • The normal work week begins on a Monday and ends on a Sunday; and
  • The normal work day is either 7.50 or 8.00 hours and usually scheduled between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm.

Example of Regular Schedule (full-time employee)

  • If your standard work day is 7.50 hours/day; and
  • Your standard workweek is 37.50 hours/week (75.00 hours for a 2 week period):

Flexible Hours of Work

You may have the option to vary your starting and ending time, within the core business hours as specified in your Collective Agreement (found under ‘hours of work’).

Example: If you’re a full-time employee and the core business hours for your collective agreement are from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a standard workday of 7.50 hours, you may request to work:

  • With a starting time between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., and
  • An ending time between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Example of Flexible Hours of Work (full-time employee)

  • If your standard work day is 7.50 hours/day; and
  • Your standard workweek is 37.50 hours/week (75.00 hours for a 2 week period):

Note: This option is only available to employees who work during normal business hours.

Variable Hours of Work

Also known as a "Compressed Workweek" or "Alternate Work Arrangement (AWA)"

You may complete your weekly hours of work on a different schedule than the standard five day work week.

Example of Variable Hours of Work (full-time employee)

  • If your standard work day is 7.50 hours/day; and
  • Your standard workweek is 37.50 hours/week (75.00 hours for a 2 week period):

Conditions

Your work schedule must respect the following conditions:

  • You must obtain approval from your manager;
  • Your work schedule must respect the provisions outlined in your Collective Agreement

Note: Working arrangements such as Flexible hours and Variable hours are subject to operational requirements.

How to Apply - Under Review

To apply for one of these types of working arrangements you must complete a Work Schedule (HRB5026) (PDF, 278 KB) (opens new window) form and submit to your manager for approval.

Your manager is responsible to enter the schedule changes in myEMS (PeopleSoft) (opens new window) with the exception of an increase or decrease in weekly hours.

Increase or decrease in weekly hours

Starting April 1:

Employee must complete a Work Schedule (HRB5026) (PDF, 278 KB) (opens new window) to request a schedule change with an increase or decrease in their weekly hours and submit to their manager for approval. The completed and signed form must be sent to Compensation and Benefits Service Centre for processing.
